Wayne Rooney scored twice as England took a giant stride towards World Cup qualification by beating Belarus to make it maximum points from four games.
Steven Gerrard gave England the lead from 30 yards after 11 minutes, but Pavel Sitko headed a deserved leveller for Belarus before the break.
Rooney turned in a cross from Emile Heskey five minutes after the break.
And for Gerrard, a spectacular strike will increase his fragile self-confidence in an England shirt and silence any lingering doubts about his worth at international level.
Rooney’s double also demonstrated his growing maturity as he provided a deadly spearhead to the attack, ably assisted by the powerful Heskey, who was winning his 50th England cap.

Niagara Falls, Ontario’s Frank Dancevic fought back from a set down to defeat Tim Smyczek (USA) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the $50,000 Lubbock Challenger in Texas on Thursday.
Dancevic, seeded fourth, will now take on No. 5 seed Rajeev Ram (USA) in the quarter-finals. Ram narrowly escaped a second round defeat by winning a third set tiebreak against Jesse Witten (USA). Ram holds a 2-1 record against Dancevic in Challenger Series events but it was Dancevic who easily won their last meeting on hard courts.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) Kyle Busch declared his title hopes over after his engine blew during Round 2 of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.
Not so fast, driver. Crew chief Steve Addington isn’t ready to wave the checkered flag on a title just yet.
“We’re down, but we’re not dead yet,” Addington insisted. “There’s still a long ways to go and anything can happen.”
After two bad races to start the Chase, the team that won the “regular-season” points title now finds itself dead last in the Chase standings. Busch is in 12th place and trails leader Carl Edwards by 210 points.
Addington admits its a huge hole to climb out of, and even if Busch is skeptical about a possible rebound, the crew chief plans to take the team to Kansas Speedway this weekend looking for the strong run that can jump-start a comeback.

AUSTRALIA and New Zealand rugby bosses are set for a showdown with South Africa over the survival of the ELVs after their call for the Super 14 to adopt the northern hemisphere’s watered-down rules.
In a move with the potential to all but kill off the popular law changes, South Africa want SANZAR to scrap the “sanctions” Experimental Law Variation to help them prepare for a British and Irish Lions tour in June.
The “sanctions” ELV is the most crucial rule change, in which most penalty offences are reduced to free-kicks. This ensures a sped-up game and fewer boring penalty goal battles.
“We have a stance of supporting the sanctions ELV, and an overwhelming majority of players from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa had a similar view after this year’s Super 14,” an ARU spokesman said.

Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari said he would ‘open the door’ for Cristiano Ronaldo to join the London club if he decided to leave Manchester United.
Ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash between the teams, the former Portugal manager was quoted in British newspapers saying he has a father-son relationship with Ronaldo.
‘When I was with Portugal, I had to choose three players every year for the World Player of the Year award,’ he was quoted as saying in Saturday’s Daily Mail.
‘One year I chose Didier Drogba, another year I wrote John Terry and another year I voted for Frank Lampard.
